My Dinner Party Essentials

Over time, I’ve gathered a handful of pieces that I reach for again and again, no matter the season or menu. These are my dinner party essentials - beautiful, functional pieces that make hosting feel joyful, effortless, and distinctly you.

01. Platters

The foundation of any table. A range of colours and sizes is great but I really think you only need 2 or 3. A long oval platter; just as good for a whole fish as it is for a roast vegetable salad. A large round shallow bowl is very handy to have in the cupboard; meat dishes, a salad, or even a chocolate mousse!
Oval and rectangular shapes are perfect for narrow tables, and dishwasher-safe is always a win.

A few favourites:

02. Serving Utensils

Beautiful utensils elevate even the simplest dishes - they’re functional, yes, but also part of the theatre of serving. I keep a few sets of tongs (a good-looking one is surprisingly hard to find! If you see some - please let me know - TYSM) and a mix of salad servers and rice spoons for versatility.

Top picks:

03. Napkins

Bring your personality to the table! Napkins are such an easy way to inject colour, texture, and mood. I love mixing styles across different dinners - embroidered, ruffled, or classic linen. Usually sold in packs of four, I always go for twelve to suit any party size.

Brands I love:

04. Small Vessels

If you ask me, there’s no such thing as too many small bowls. They have endless uses - from olives and butter to sauces, condiments, and little sides. They add height and character to a table while being endlessly practical.

Go-tos:

05. Tablecloths

A long, flowing tablecloth instantly transforms a table. I love a pattern but I think I love a single colour more (controversial I know - given my collection!). My go to is the 4m Linen Tablecloth from Bed Threads, they drape and layer beautifully and come in a range of colours. My rule: the longer, the better (there’s nothing more frustrating than one that’s just a few centimetres short!).

A few tips:

  • Treat stains before removing the cloth - they’re most visible this way. Once the table is cleared, get the stain remover and treat it on the table, lay out the napkins and do the same!

  • Stick with one versatile colour and switch things up with napkins - a much more affordable way to refresh your tablescape.

06. Oven-to-Table Servingware

The holy grail of convenience - oven-to-table dishes mean less washing up and food that stays warm until the last moment. I love pieces that are as beautiful as they are practical, ready to move straight from the oven to the table.

Tried and true:
Mud Australia and Le Creuset are firm favourites, and I’m currently obsessed with copper so I had to add the Williams Sonoma’s copper rondeau. Each brings a touch of understated luxury to the table.

The Joy Is in the Details

Every dinner party tells a story - the food, the company, the table itself. The right pieces don’t just make things easier; they make the experience feel complete. Start with a few favourites, invest in what brings you joy, and let your table reflect the spirit of your gatherings: generous, relaxed, and beautifully considered.
